Welcome to the page for all things Science! Here you will find our long term plan and information about how we teach and encourage the implementation of Science at Heskin Pemberton’s!

At Heskin Pemberton’s, the intent of our Science curriculum is to foster a stimulating learning environment that encourages inquiry and exploration. We aim to instil a passion for Science, promoting not only academic excellence but also the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Through a well-structured curriculum, students are encouraged to engage in scientific inquiry, fostering a mind-set that values investigation and evidence-based reasoning. It is our belief that by providing opportunities for all students to explore scientific concepts in depth, they will develop the confidence to challenge assumptions and to question the world around them.
Planning: Central to our intent is our Science curriculum. The alignment of our curriculum with the PLAN Science framework, which serves as a strategic guide for curriculum planning and execution, ensures that our curriculum not only meets the statutory requirements but offers adaptations unique to our school context. We provide an inclusive curriculum that meets the diverse needs of all learners, promoting equity in opportunity and engagement in science for every pupil.
Teaching:
· Science is taught weekly. Lesson lengths range from 1 hour to 2.5 hours, depending on the structure and content of the lesson.
· Every Science lesson starts with a SNAP task. These are recorded in either floor books (KS1) or individual books (KS2).
· KS1 have floor books and individual books. KS2 use individual books only.
· Some evidence is recorded on SeeSaw.
· Every unit contains 2x TAPS assessment opportunities.
Where possible, Science is integrated with other areas of the curriculum, to provide a holistic learning experience and to highlight the relevance of science in everyday life.
Leadership, Assessment and Feedback:
· The subject leader completes observations and pupil voice once termly.
· Formative assessment is ongoing.
· Summative assessments are completed through TAPS throughout the Science units.
· Data is collected by subject leader at the end of every term. Data is reported to the head teacher.
· We aim for as much live feedback as possible, meaning the children get the most from the feedback. Occasionally, feedback is given on a whole class basis, in small group interventions or on a 1:1 basis.
CPD is offered where required. Continuous staff training on effective pedagogy and changes in Science are delivered during staff meetings to ensure that teachers feel confident and well-equipped to deliver outstanding lessons.
The impact of our Science curriculum is evidenced by:
· Pupil Engagement and Enjoyment: Pupils demonstrate high levels of enthusiasm and interest in Science.
· Academic Progress and Attainment: An upward trend in assessment data, indicating that the vast majority of pupils, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds, achieve age-related expectations in Science.
· Development of Skills: Pupils exhibit strong inquiry skills, demonstrated through well-structured investigations, the formulation of hypotheses and the ability to analyse and interpret data, preparing them for higher-level scientific thinking.
· Positive Behaviour and Attitudes: A school culture that values curiosity and respect for the environment is evident, with pupils applying scientific knowledge to make informed decisions about health and sustainability in their daily lives.
