Modern Foreign Language

Welcome to MFL at Heskin

Welcome to the page for all things MFL! Here you will find our long term plan and information about how we teach and encourage the implementation of MFL at Heskin Pemberton’s!

Intent

At Heskin Pemberton’s, Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) is taught in Key Stage 2. Our chosen language is French. Our intention is that the Language Angels scheme of work and resources are used to ensure we offer a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious curriculum that will inspire and excite our
pupils using a wide variety of topics and themes. We aim to ensure that the foreign language knowledge of our pupils progresses within each academic
year and is extended year upon throughout their time in Key Stage 2. In doing this, our curriculum will always be relevant and in line with meeting or exceeding national DfE requirements.

Our intentions are that all pupils:

  • Enjoy their MFL lessons and develop positive curiosity about foreign languages
  • Can use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts
  • Recognise the importance of learning MFL
  • Leave Heskin Pemberton’s with solid foundations for future language learning of technology that children have positive experiences. They may use technology to express themselves, both as tools for learning and as a means to drive the generation forward into the future.

Implementation

Planning: Our dynamic programme of study is clearly outlined in both long-term and short-term planning. Teaching staff following the planning and resources provided through Language Angels.
Each unit will:

  • Have clearly defined objectives and aims detailed through Language Angels scheme of work
  • Incorporate interactive whiteboard materials to include ample speaking and listening tasks
  • Incorporate challenge sections and desk-based activities that will be offered will three levels of stretch and differentiation.
  • Offer reading and writing activities
  • Include a grammar concept which will increase in complexity as pupils move from Early Language units, through Intermediate units and into Progressive units.
  • Provide extended writing activities to ensure that pupils are recalling previously learnt language and, by reusing it, will be able to recall it and use it with greater ease and accuracy.

Teaching: All classes will have access to high-quality materials and resources using the Language Angels scheme of work. This will progressively develop pupil skills in foreign languages through regularly taught and well-planned lessons. Early Language lessons are planned to last approximately 30 minutes; Intermediate and Progressive lessons last approximately 45 minutes. Teachers are free to adapt their teaching according to their weekly timetable. This means that lessons can be taught as either: weekly 30/45 minute lessons, or 1 hour/1.5 hour fortnightly lessons. Where lessons are taught fortnightly, weekly games are included in ‘off’ weeks to support knowledge retention.

Leadership, Assessment and Feedback:

  • Subject leader completes observations and pupil voice once termly.
  • Feedback is ongoing and live; mainly verbal during learning.
  • Formative assessment is ongoing during lessons.
  • Summative assessments are completed at the end of every unit. Their end of unit assessment contains speaking, listening, reading and writing exercises.
  •  Data is collected by subject leader at the end of every term. Data is reported to the head teacher.

Impact

By engaging with our French curriculum, our children will develop a comprehensive understanding of the language, enabling them to communicate effectively and confidently. The curriculum is designed to foster linguistic skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing, which are essential for
their personal and academic growth. Students will appreciate cultural nuances and traditions of francophone countries, enriching their global awareness and cultural sensitivity. This understanding will not only enhance their language
proficiency but also encourage a lifelong love for languages and learning.
